If your delivery drinks are arriving in a state you would not hand to a customer in store, you have probably been offered two answers. Buy better carriers. Or seal the cups. They sound like competing solutions to the same problem, so most operators pick one, and a meaningful number are disappointed.
They are disappointed because the two products are not alternatives. They address different failure modes, and choosing between them without knowing which failure mode you have is how packaging budgets get spent twice.
THE SHORT ANSWER
A cup carrier manages position. A drink seal manages containment.
A carrier stops the cup from tipping, sliding, or knocking into the food. A seal stops liquid escaping through the rim and the straw hole while the cup is being carried. If your drinks are arriving tipped over, you have a position problem. If they are arriving upright but damp — wet lid, soggy bag, liquid down the side of the cup — you have a containment problem, and a carrier will not fix it.
Cup carriers, drink trays and delivery cup holders all do the same fundamental job: they hold cups in a fixed position relative to each other and to the rest of the order. Cardboard trays, moulded pulp holders, and the insert frames built into courier backpacks are all variations on it.
Where they genuinely earn their place:
For a four-drink order travelling by car to an office, a carrier is doing real work and there is no sensible argument against using one.
The limits show up as soon as the journey stops resembling a short walk.
This is the whole of it. A cup held perfectly upright in an excellent carrier will still seep at the rim if the lid fit is marginal, and will still drain through the straw hole if the bag it sits in is tilted. Carriers were designed for customers walking from a counter to a car, and they do that well. They were never designed to contain liquid.
A carrier keeps a cup upright relative to the carrier. If a courier lays the bag flat across a scooter footwell, or a bicycle backpack leans through a corner, the whole assembly tilts together. The cup stays neatly upright inside a tray that is now on its side.
Carriers are bulky by design. In an insulated delivery bag that space competes directly with the food, which is one reason couriers sometimes remove drinks from the carrier to make an order fit.
A carrier tells the customer nothing about whether the drink was opened after preparation. In a market where customers have grown used to sealed food packaging, an unsealed cup increasingly reads as an omission.
A carrier is a per-order cost that scales with the number of drinks and adds material volume to every delivery, which sits awkwardly against most packaging reduction commitments.
A drink seal creates a barrier across the mouth of the cup so liquid cannot escape at the rim or through the straw hole while the drink is in transit. There are three broad types.

Often, yes — and the two together cost less than most operators expect, because they are solving different problems rather than duplicating each other.

The wrong version of this decision is replacing carriers with seals and expecting cups to stop falling over, or buying better carriers and expecting lids to stop weeping. Both are common, and both waste a budget cycle.

Usually not on their own. Carriers are effective against cups knocking together and against drinks crushing food. They are not a containment solution.
For single-drink orders, generally yes — a carrier adds bulk and cost without addressing the leak path. For multi-drink orders, a carrier still does useful work by stopping cups from levering each other’s lids off and by making the order manageable for a courier. In that case, seal every cup and keep the carrier.
Sealing tends to matter more for coffee, for two reasons. Coffee deliveries are often single-cup orders, where a carrier adds little. And hot drinks generate steam and pressure change in a sealed bag, which drives moisture through any gap at the rim — the failure mode a carrier cannot touch.
A seal placed between the cup and the lid adds a couple of seconds per drink and no equipment. Heat-seal film systems are faster per cup once running but require a machine, counter space, and the queue that forms around it. The right test is to time it during a real peak period rather than a quiet one.
Only for heat-seal film. An insert placed between the cup and the lid needs no equipment at all, because the lid supplies the pressure that holds the seal in place. That makes it considerably easier to standardise across a multi-site or franchise network, where equipment cost, footprint and servicing become significant obstacles.
The lowest unit cost is rarely the lowest total cost. A useful comparison totals refunds, remade drinks, staff time, replacement deliveries, and the margin on beverages currently kept off the delivery menu because of spill risk, then divides by orders to get a cost per successful delivery. Measured that way, the cheapest packaging often turns out to be the most expensive option.
Most do. An intact seal shows the customer the drink has not been opened since preparation, which is a hygiene and trust signal a carrier cannot provide. It is worth confirming with any supplier whether tampering is genuinely visible, or whether the seal can be removed and replaced without a trace.
